Cheap Flights for Christmas

In 2026, Christmas falls on Friday, December 25. Combined with the weekend, travelers get a built-in three-day Christmas weekend, and many extend it further with the New Year's holiday the following week.

For Christmas flights, the sooner you start tracking fares, the better. If your dates are fixed, booking 45–60 days before departure can land the best Christmas airfare deals, since this is one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

Christmas Eve (December 24) and the days right before it see the heaviest outbound travel, while the days after Christmas and around New Year's see strong return and rebooking traffic. To find better Christmas airfare, consider shifting your travel dates.

Fly on Monday or Tuesday to find the cheapest Christmas airline tickets. Traveling a day or two before or after the peak Christmas Eve and Christmas Day rush generally offers better pricing opportunities.

Sometimes, but not always. Factors like destination, demand and travel dates make a big difference when looking for international Christmas airfare within your budget.

Popular Christmas Weekend Destinations include Orlando, New York, Las Vegas, Miami/Fort Lauderdale, Aspen/Vail, Honolulu, Washington, D.C. and Chicago. Prioritize destinations with nonstop flights and short airport-to-city transfers for a quick getaway.

To find cheap flights for Christmas, compare flexible dates, nearby airports, different airlines and one-way combinations. Always check baggage, seat and airport-transfer costs before deciding which fare offers the best value.

It depends on what you're after. Warm-weather escapes like Orlando and Miami/Fort Lauderdale suit travelers chasing sunshine, ski destinations like Aspen/Vail suit a classic snowy Christmas, and cities like New York, Chicago and Washington, D.C. offer holiday lights, markets and festive events.

Christmas is one of the highest-demand travel periods of the year, with schools out and many families traveling on the same handful of dates. Limited seat availability on peak days, combined with high demand, pushes fares up compared to off-peak travel.

Use flexible date search tools to compare fares across nearby days, check alternate airports near your origin and destination, and compare total trip cost including baggage and seat fees rather than just the base fare.

Christmas is a widely observed federal holiday in the United States, celebrated on December 25 each year. It is a time when many Americans gather with family, exchange gifts and travel to be with loved ones, making it one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

Major U.S. carriers such as American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, JetBlue and Alaska Airlines typically add capacity and schedule extra flights around the Christmas travel period to meet holiday demand.

Booking Christmas airfare roughly 45–60 days ahead of travel tends to offer a good balance of availability and price. If your dates are fixed and a fare meets your budget, it is generally better to book rather than wait for a potential price drop.
